Does a twin-wall stainless steel chimney need cleaning?

In short: yes. Many people assume modern stainless steel systems are maintenance-free – after all, stainless steel does not rust, and the insulation looks high-quality and fully enclosed. But this has no bearing on the legal cleaning requirement. We explain why and how often your chimney actually needs sweeping.

The short answer: yes – whatever the material

Whether made from masonry, ceramic or stainless steel, every chimney connected to a heating appliance is subject to statutory sweeping and inspection requirements. The outer casing material is irrelevant – what matters is the fuel you burn and how often you use the appliance.

Why insulation does not change the cleaning requirement

The insulation layer in a twin-wall system sits between the inner and outer pipes, keeping the flue gas temperature stable and reducing heat loss. However, soot and combustion residues still build up on the inner pipe, just as they do in any other chimney. How often does it need sweeping?

Germany's nationwide Sweeping and Inspection Ordinance (KÜO) specifies how often your chimney sweep must visit, depending on the fuel and how you use your heating appliance:

• Solid fuels (e.g. wood), used all year round 4× per year
• Solid fuels, used regularly during the heating season 3× per year
• Solid fuels, used occasionally 1–2× per year
• Wood pellets 2× per year
• Liquid fuels (oil), used regularly 3× per year
• Room-sealed gas appliances approximately every 2 years

The exact intervals may vary slightly between chimney-sweeping districts – your district chimney sweep will give you the legally binding dates for your system.

Why regular cleaning matters

Chimneys that are not cleaned regularly pose a real risk: thick soot deposits can ignite. The resulting chimney fire reaches temperatures that even high-quality systems cannot withstand indefinitely. Deposits also narrow the flue, impair the draught of your heating appliance and, combined with condensate, can shorten the system's service life. Regular cleaning is therefore not just a formality, but an active fire-safety measure.

Who carries out the cleaning?

The statutory sweeping may only be carried out by your responsible district chimney sweep – you cannot do it yourself or appoint an independent provider. To access the inner pipe, the system needs a cleaning opening or inspection door in a suitable location. Remember to include suitable access when configuring your chimney.
