Buying a stainless steel chimney: 5 things to consider first

A stainless steel chimney is an investment for decades, so it is important to ask the right questions before buying. Be sure to check these 5 points before choosing a system.

01The correct diameter (nominal diameter)

The diameter of your chimney must match the connected heating appliance exactly, whether it is a wood-burning stove, gas boiler or pellet boiler. Choosing the wrong nominal diameter affects the draught: if it is too narrow, smoke backs up; if it is too wide, the flue gases cool too quickly. Both can lead to sooting and inefficient combustion. Always check the appliance manufacturer’s specifications before selecting a nominal diameter. Common diameters are 130mm, 150mm and 180mm.

02Twin-wall rather than single-wall

A twin-wall stainless steel chimney with mineral wool insulation keeps the flue gas temperature consistently high and moves the dew point outwards, reliably protecting the inside against condensation and sooting. The insulation also provides sufficient clearance from combustible components such as timber beams or insulation layers. Single-wall systems may be cheaper, but they are only suitable for very specific applications.

03Certification and approval

Not every chimney will be approved by your chimney sweep. Look for testing to DIN EN 1856-1 and independent certification, for example by TÜV SÜD. Only certified systems provide the verified consistency of performance required for operating approval and therefore for your own safety. All our OSKAR chimneys are TÜV-approved and tested to IN EN 1856-1.

04Ease of installation

Not every system is suitable for self-installation. Before buying, find out how the components connect. Push-fit and twist-lock systems, such as the OSKAR SAS-TEC system, can be installed without tools or a specialist company, while other systems require time-consuming bolting or welding. This saves you both time and installation costs.

05Guarantee and manufacturer support

A chimney is an investment in your home, so long-term protection matters. OSKAR Care+ gives you a guarantee of up to 30 years. This is also possible because we manufacture our chimneys ourselves. We control every step, from material selection to quality control, without intermediaries. When buying, ask specifically about the guarantee period, spare parts availability and whether you can contact the manufacturer directly.
